Determining a baby's gender ?. How ??

posted by my-blogmedia | Saturday, May 10, 2008 |

Hi,,,
Sometime a couple have their hope for having a baby boy or a baby girl. But for several couples, that don't be a problem. They accept whatever the gender. The curious question that arises is can we determine the baby's sex before the birth?. My-blogmedia quoted the article regarding this here for you. Enjoy !.

The rather miraculous process of human reproduction is surrounded in mystery and myth. Theories abound regarding how to improve fertility, treat morning sickness and induce labor. Predicting a baby's gender is another area filled with knowing opinions based largely in folklore and intuition.

I have recently heard it suggested that sperm for male children come from one testicle, and sperm for female children come from the other one. The evidence for this concept? A man who had damage to one testicle (from mumps) had five sons because his "female testicle" was not working. This myth follows a basic misunderstanding about gender determination (not to mention that when mumps causes inflammation of the testicle, it usually affects them both).

How Gender Determination Works
Although there is no such thing as a "female testicle" or a "male testicle," a baby's gender is determined by his or her father. If the father provides an X chromosome, the baby will be female, and if he supplies a Y chromosome, the baby will be male. The body has no mechanism to segregate the X sperm from the Y sperm.
Because sperm containing X chromosomes and sperm containing Y chromosomes are nearly equal in number and because the chances for either type of sperm to fertilize an egg are roughly equal, each naturally occurring conception leads to an equal chance of having a boy or a girl. Mothers can provide only an X chromosome, so they do not have the same influence over gender.

Understanding The Myth
Myths regarding how baby boys or girls are determined probably have their roots in at least two faulty assumptions. One is the concept that past events alter future ones. For example, the chances that a couple will have five boys in a row is one in 32 (or about three in 100); but with each individual child, the chances of having a boy are one in 2 (50 percent), even if the couple already has four sons. Another assumption is that when something unusual happens (for example, having five boys in row), there must be an explanation that is separate from the normal state of affairs. Although unusual things do happen, they do not imply that the laws of nature should be repealed!

It is perhaps easy to see how the notion of "testicular gender" might take hold, since there are two genders and two testicles. For a father who has five sons, it may be tempting to assume that a single functioning testicle has led to this otherwise unlikely situation, yet men who have had a testicle removed surgically (for example, because of an injury or a tumor) still, on average, father male and female babies in equal proportions.

Changing Your Odds
Despite what you may have heard, there is relatively little a couple can do -- through naturally occurring conception -- to alter the chances of conceiving a boy or a girl. Many people believe that position during intercourse, diet, the lunar cycle or gender patterns in the couple's families all contribute to the sex of the baby. In fact, these factors have no well-established effect.

However, the timing of intercourse can have an effect. Sperm carrying Y chromosomes apparently swim faster but do not survive as long as their X-carrying counterparts. So if a couple has intercourse right at the time of ovulation, the faster-swimming male sperm have an advantage, and a male baby is slightly more likely – but only very slightly. But if the timing is a day or two earlier, more of the male sperm die out, and a female baby is a bit more likely. Even so, it is often difficult to time ovulation accurately, and your odds of determining gender do not change much. Without the application of advanced (and sometimes invasive and expensive) technology, such as in vitro fertilization, the chances of conceiving a boy or a girl remain close to equal.

The Bottom Line
If you have a strong preference for a boy or a girl, your options are limited. You could plan to have enough babies so both genders are eventually represented. Or it may be better to rethink your position and hope for a healthy baby of either sex.

Edge of Darkness: The Next Mel Gibson's movie..!!!

posted by my-blogmedia | Wednesday, May 07, 2008 | ,

Hi my-blogmedia readers,
Here is the rumour about the next Mel Gibson's film. After his rest for a while, he will come back again. Here is the news.

In the six years since his last starring role ("Signs"), Mel Gibson has battled one controversy after another. First, his blockbuster directorial effort "The Passion of the Christ" caused uproar among some Jewish groups because of its negative depiction of Jews during the time of Jesus. His follow-up film, "Apocalypto," as marred by negative publicity after his infamous anti-Semitic remarks during a DUI arrest a few months before.
Now, after keeping a low profile for the past two years, Gibson has agreed to headline Martin Campbell's new thriller, "Edge of Darkness." A big-screen adaptation of a 1985 BBC miniseries Campbell also directed, "Darkness" will find Gibson playing a conservative police investigator who discovers a conspiracy behind the death of his activist daughter.
William Monahan ("The Departed") wrote the script, and the project is currently being independently financed by producer Graham King ("The Aviator"). It will be intriguing to see if any studios acquire the feature before the cameras roll or if they take a "wait and see" approach. No doubt numerous debates are being waged in Hollywood boardrooms as to whether Gibson can still be a potent box office star after his DUI incident. But with Campbell seemingly back in a creative groove after "Casino Royale" and the respected Monahan and King on board, it's hard to imagine someone not taking a gamble on it.

Can Lipgloss Causes Cancer ??

posted by my-blogmedia | Tuesday, May 06, 2008 | ,

Hi, this article is worth to be read by you, girls. My-blogmedia posted it for you. Enjoy.

Some dermatologists say that slathering on shiny lip glosses can actually increase your risk of developing skin
cancer. Of course, wearing any lip product without SPF doesn’t exactly shield the thin skin from sun damage. But the slick, shiny nature of the gloss could be making the sun’s UV rays hit harder, some experts say.

“These lip glosses can make more of the light rays penetrate directly through the skin instead of getting reflected off of the skin’s surface,” says Dr. Christine Brown, a dermatologist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. (You're covered, however, if you wear lip gloss with SPF.)

At worst, say some dermatologists, the resulting sun damage can lead to potentially fatal forms of skin cancer. An estimated 3,500 new cases of skin cancer of the lips are diagnosed each year, and 90 percent of those cancers are squamous cell carcinoma. While that form of cancer isn't usually particularly serious, it can be more aggressive on the lips than on other parts of the skin. If left untreated, it can cause disfigurement, and in very few cases, it can spread to other organs and become deadly. But the less serious effects may grab a lip gloss junkie’s attention more quickly: All that sun exposure could be slowly building gross, non-cancerous disfigurements on your lips. One such effect is actinic keratosis, a small, scaly patch of skin that can morph into a wart-like bump if left untreated. Sun exposure can also cause small brown spots that look like freckles on the lips. The spots are noncancerous but could cause people to whisper, "Hey, you've got food on your lips.

Sun damage can also cause premature aging, making the already thin skin on your lips even thinner, which can lead to rips and tears. Ultraviolet light zaps skin of much of its elasticity, leaving the skin lax. That lack of elasticity can prevent the upper and lower lips from lining up properly, which can cause pools of saliva to collect at the corners of the mouth.

It's the moisture in lip gloss that's to blame, says Dr. Bruce Robinson, a Manhattan dermatologist. Your lips are equipped with a protective outer layer, but the hydration of a lip gloss "kind of smooshes that down," Robinson says. Once that outer layer is effectively squashed, it's easier for UV rays to penetrate deeper into the skin. "Instead of having to travel through that thicker layer, it's more condensed," Robinson says. "So the UV rays reach are reaching deeper layers of epidermis and dermis because you don't have this forcefield. "Sun's laser focus on lips. Apart from the extra hydration, the “super shine” and “ultra shine” of the glosses could be damaging as well.

“Take a magnifying glass and put it over your lips,” Robinson says. When you apply lip gloss and go out in the sun, “that’s essentially what you’re doing.” But no studies have confirmed the lip gloss-skin cancer link, and not all dermatologists agree that it poses a risk.

“The only way I could see it is if you’re thinking you’re protected, and you stay out in the sun longer, that may
increase your risk,” says Robin Ashinoff, a dermatologist in Hackensack, N.J. That's what happened to Sherry Duplar, a fair-skinned, horseback-riding redhead who spends as much time as possible outdoors. She always applied lip balm or gloss, and figured that was enough.

“I didn’t realize, back then, that our lips were so susceptible,” says Duplar, who’s 59 and lives in Mesquite, Texas. But about 12 years ago, Duplar’s lips were cracked and chapped, and constantly peeling, and nothing she did would heal them. She’d developed actinic cheilitis, a precancerous condition that's sometimes known as "farmer's lip" or "sailor's lip." It often leads to squamous cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer.

Since then, she’s had three laser treatments, to deconstruct the affected skin cells. The treatments which leave her lips raw, swelled up and oozing, for as many as three weeks. “It was nasty,” Duplar says.

Now she slathers on lip balm boasting 50 SPF before she goes out in the sun, which makes her dermatologist, the lip gloss-bashing Brown, much happier. Brown wishes women would abandon their lip glosses for lip balm with an SPF of at least 30. But for those who balk at tossing all their lip gloss, Robinson offers a compromise: find a lip gloss infused with SPF, which also protects the lips from ultraviolet light.

Mariah Carey get married ??

posted by my-blogmedia | Tuesday, May 06, 2008 |

Hi all, my-blogmedia here is posting the rumour regading Mariah Carey quoted from msn. Here is the detail.

Has Mariah Carey joined the long list of celebrities who have made an impetuous, imprudent decision to walk down the aisle? The rumor mill began churning Thursday with rumblings that the high-maintenance diva, 39, who not so coincidentally has been pulling out all the stops to promote her new album, secretly tied the knot with rumored new boyfriend Nick Cannon, 27, whom she was first linked to just two weeks ago. The New York Post claims the cougar-riffic couple just pledged to stick together until death in a small ceremony at the chanteuse's new house in the Bahamas. "There was no pre-nup," a concerned source tells the paper. "There wasn't time." Their reps have yet to comment. On Saturday, Mariah stepped out with a suspicious, doorknob-sized diamond weighing down her ring finger, with a snitch telling the New York Post it was indeed a gift from the actor, who was supposedly overheard at the Manhattan store where he bought the behemoth bauble -- and evidently emptied his bank account -- talking about how they're getting hitched. The specs on the sparkler are impressively ostentatious. The paper claims it cost $2.5 million and is a retina-searing 17 carats, which includes a 10-carat stone in the center. But was it a regift? Some online sleuths have noted the similarity between Carey's digit-crushing dazzler and the rock Cannon presented to Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks last year in a Jumbotron-captured proposal in Times Square. It's unclear if he got the ring back when their engagement flamed out five months later. If the marriage rumors prove true (and that remains a really big if), this would be the first for Cannon and the second for Carey, who divorced music mogul Tommy Mottola in 1998. "I don't know how you would describe my marriage," she recently told OK! magazine. "It was a kidnapping in a golden cage. I look at the past and keep the memories. There have been bad and good times."
