'Jurassic Park' Author Dies

posted by my-blogmedia | Sunday, November 09, 2008 | , ,

Michael Crichton, the million-selling author of such historic and prehistoric science thrillers as "Jurassic Park," "Timeline" and "The Andromeda Strain," has died of cancer, his family said.

Crichton died Tuesday in Los Angeles at age 66 after privately battling cancer.

"Through his books, Michael Crichton served as an inspiration to students of all ages, challenged scientists in many fields, and illuminated the mysteries of the world in a way we could all understand," his family said in a statement.

"While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us — and entertained us all while doing so — his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes."

Japanesse's Girl: The Longest Living in the World ?

posted by my-blogmedia | Friday, August 29, 2008 | ,

Hi my-blogmedia readers. Do you know that based on current research sometime this year that Japanesse's girl can live longer than others?. Really. Just Read this post. Enjoy.

Japanese girls born last year can expect to live until they are 86 years old, which would make them the longest survivors in the world, a report from the country's health ministry showed.

Boys born in 2007 can expect to live to the age of 79.2, ranking third after Iceland and Hong Kong, the report said.

Japan's females have topped the world's longevity ranks for 23 years, something researchers have attributed to their healthy diet and tight social ties, among other reasons.

The report is the latest sign that Japan is ageing quicker than any other country, with government data showing a tenth of the population aged 75 years or older.

The proportion of those 65 years or older is also seen doubling to 40 percent by mid-century.

"People are in different social environments and are influenced by various factors and eating habits, so it's hard to answer the question of why people live long," a ministry spokesman said.

"But we can say that the improvement of medical technologies helps," the spokesman added.
Japan has improved treatments for the ageing population's three biggest killers -- cancer, heart disease and stroke. Japan also has one of the world's lowest birth-rates, leaving the government with the challenge of how to fund its pension requirements, take care of its elderly and maintain productivity.

Tallan the 8 Years Old Guitarist

posted by my-blogmedia | Friday, August 15, 2008 | ,

Hi, readers. This boy is amazing. He play like a guitar hero. What a wonderful boy. Read the post.
When Tallan "T-Man" Latz was 5, he saw Joe Satriani playing guitar on TV. "I turned around to my dad and said, "That's exactly what I want to do.'"

Three years and countless hours of practicing later, 8-year-old Tallan is a blues guitar prodigy. He's played in bars and clubs, including the House of Blues in Chicago, and even jammed with Les Paul and Jackson Browne. He has a summer of festivals scheduled and has drawn interest from venues worldwide.

And what, you might ask, would a kid not even in the third grade have the blues about? The state of Wisconsin for one, and some possibly jealous older musicians for another.

An anonymous e-mail sent to state officials complained that Tallan was too young to perform in taverns and nightclubs because of state child labor laws. His booking agent even got an anonymous letter threatening her with death if she keeps booking him.

When Tallan's father read him the state's letter saying he couldn't play clubs anymore (he can still play festivals), the boy's response — like his music — seemed beyond his years.

"He goes, 'It's not how many times you get knocked down but it's how many times you get back up and go forward,' Carl Latz said his son told him. "And I told him that's exactly what this is all about and if nothing else this letter just taught you a life lesson."

The lesson can be stiff: Each day he performs, the employer can be fined $25 to $1,000 and the parent from $10 to $250.

Jennifer Ortiz of the state Equal Rights Division said her agency has a responsibility to enforce the law once it becomes aware of a violation.

"Well, the law prohibits it, and the Legislature enacted the laws to protect the health, safety and welfare of all children."

Tallan's agent, Sharon Pomaville, said she received a threatening letter June 2 warning her to stop booking the boy. She thinks he's a local musician and believes he's harmless. Deputies came to her house, but she didn't want to pursue the case.

Greg Koch, 42, an internationally known guitarist and clinician for Fender Musical Instruments, called the backlash despicable. He said most 8-year-olds don't have the strength or attention span to pursue guitar or can't endure the calluses.

"It's strange that a kid at this age would glean onto this particular kind of music and show the intensity and kind of the ability to function as kind of 8-year-old blues guy," he said.

Brad Tolinski, editor-in-chief of Guitar World magazine, said kid guitar prodigies are rare, with one emerging perhaps every four or five years. "It would be unusual to find an 8-year-old who can play Joe Satriani licks," he said.

Tallan, whose heroes are Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, has 13 guitars and endorsements from at least nine companies to use their equipment. He can read music but plays mostly from memory.

He has two bands — one with veterans called T-Man's Blues Project and another with 16-and-younger bandmates called Tallan "The T-Man" Latz and the Young Guns. He also sings and plays drums, harmonica, bass and piano.

Top 10 Cheater Animals (2): Orangutan

posted by my-blogmedia | Monday, July 21, 2008 | ,

Readers, continuing the previous post, here are the top 10 cheater animals based on survey. Now my-blogmedia presenting number 2. Here it is. Enjoy.

Orangutan
Orangutans are remarkably bright. In fact, some experts say their smarts are second only to humans. And like humans, orangutans have used their intelligence to craft tools. That's where the cheater part comes in -- these creatures often use their tools to pick the locks of their own cages. In fact, they are so cunning when it comes to breaking and entering (or exiting) that zookeepers have used orangutans to test the security of enclosures for other animals. Next up: safe-cracking?

Top 10 Cheater Animals (3): Virginia opossum

Readers, continuing the previous post, here are the top 10 cheater animals based on survey. Now my-blogmedia presenting number 4. Here it is. Enjoy.

Virginia opossum

The Virginia opossum cheats death by reacting to threats with an unusual tactic -- taking an immediate nap. More specifically, this is where the term "playing possum" stems from, which is often used to describe an attempt to pretend to be dead or injured with an intent to deceive. These slow-moving animals really take their performances seriously by actually going into a catatonic state to make it seem like they are really dead, even when poked. Of course, this defense mechanism doesn't work so well when there's a car involved -- kind of hard for drivers to tell the difference between faux road kill and the real thing. Oops.

Top 10 Cheater Animals (4): Hanuman Monkey

Readers, continuing the previous post, here is the top 10 cheater animals based on survey. Now my-blogmedia presenting number 4. Here it is. Enjoy.

Hanuman monkey

The Hanuman monkey is a total cheat because it steals with impunity -- thanks to the fact that its namesake is a
Hindu monkey god worshipped by millions of people. Known for its strength and valor, this highly revered primate has a lifelong get-out-of-jail-free card. Nothing is off-limits to the Hanuman monkey -- food, drinks, clothes, your toupee. Some people will even put these creatures into training to steal on their behalf. If Clooney and Pitt want to save some dough on production costs on the next "Ocean's 11" movie, perhaps they might consider casting these sneaky fellas, hahaha.

Firefly

Fireflies may conjure up happy memories of twinkling flashes in the summertime evening skies, but with over 2,000 varieties of this species flitting about, there's bound to be a few with more sinister intentions. Case in point: Most fireflies use their flashing lights to attract mates, but one type of the species has learned how to mimic the luminescent signals of other species to lure them as potential meals, as well.

Bruce Lee's old home become a museum?

posted by my-blogmedia | Saturday, July 12, 2008 | ,

A developer who owns Bruce Lee's old home in Hong Kong lobbied the government Thursday to turn the property into a museum.

Yu Pang-lin met Thursday with Hong Kong's commerce and economic development secretary about his plans for the two-story house, currently used as an hourly motel. The 86-year-old developer-turned-philanthropist had put the property on sale to raise money for victims of the recent earthquake in China's Sichuan province, but changed his mind after fans of the late martial-arts star expressed worries about the building's possible destruction.

He's willing to donate the property, where Lee lived in 1972 and '73, and wants the Hong Kong government to set up a trust that will hold the property and spearhead efforts to plan and raise funds for the museum, said Michael Tien, a local politician who attended Thursday's meeting.

Michael Choi, chairman of the property consultant company that was handling the sale of the property for Yu, said the house and the land it's on fetched an offer of more than $13 million. The press secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Frederick Ma didn't immediately return calls about Yu's proposal.

Lee, who died in Hong Kong in 1973 at age 32 from swelling of the brain, was born in San Francisco but grew up in Hong Kong.

His credits include "The Chinese Connection," "Enter the Dragon" and "Return of the Dragon."

Top 10 Cheater Animals (6): Alligator snapping turtle

posted by my-blogmedia | Wednesday, July 09, 2008 |

Readers, here are the top 10 cheater animals based on survey. Now my-blogmedia will present number 6. Here it is. Enjoy.

Alligator snapping turtle

An alligator snapping turtle can take your finger off with one chomp, but the cheat is in how it's able to lure its bait. The inside of the turtle's mouth is camouflaged, and on top of that their tongue features a worm-shaped appendage on its tip. Not only does this look like a fish's feast, but it actually mimics the movements of a worm as well. Can you really blame the fish for falling for it? All the turtle has to do is lie down, open up and say "ahhh" -- once an unsuspecting fish moves in for a closer look, the tremendous speed and force of the turtle's mouth completes the ambush. It's an open-and-shut case.

Top 10 Cheater Animals (7): Caterpillar

posted by my-blogmedia | Saturday, July 05, 2008 |

Readers, here are the top 10 cheater animals based on survey. Now my-blogmedia will present number 7. Here it is. Enjoy.

Caterpillar

Caterpillar tends to be more of a trickster, with all kinds of moves up its sleeve to stay alive. Some caterpillars mimic the look of their habitat -- such as leaves and branches -- to blend in. But there are also some that resemble other things found in nature, like bird droppings -- ew! Other caterpillars are tricky thieves; stealing
poisons from the plants they eat only to use them to arm their own spines with toxins. There's even a caterpillar that cheats death by becoming a killer. Look no further than Hawaii, which plays home to the only flesh-eating caterpillars in the world. Thank goodness tourists there are greeted with leis around their necks instead of a string of these nasty little suckers. Aloha!

Top 10 Cheater Animals (8): Chameleon

posted by my-blogmedia | Thursday, July 03, 2008 |

Readers, here are the top 10 cheater animals based on survey. Now my-blogmedia will present number 8. Here it is. Enjoy.

Chameleon
The word "chameleon" means "liar" in several languages, and like all good liars, you'll hardly believe what comes out of a chameleon's mouth -- namely, its tongue. Step aside Gene Simmons, because a chameleon's tongue is usually twice as long as its body length, extends faster than the human eye can follow, and has a sticky tip on the end used to catch prey. Chameleons can also cheat by hiding their whereabouts with their ability to change color. But sometimes, a shift in appearance is actually trying to tell you something -- for example, when they get angry, they turn red.

Top 10 Cheater Animals (9): Rat

posted by my-blogmedia | Tuesday, July 01, 2008 |

Reader, here we are continuing the top 10 cheater animals based on survey. Rat is sit on number 9. Enjoy.

Rat
When it comes to food and money, rats are truly dirty rotten scoundrels. In the United States alone, they wreak havoc to the tune of creating over $19 billion in damages per year. It's no wonder, really, when you consider that there are an estimated 70 million rats just within New York City -- that's of course not counting pickpockets, slight-of-hand street vendors or crooked politicians. To make matters worse, not only are rats some of the most expensive cheaters, they're also surprisingly fast, with their top speed clocking in at around six miles per hour.

Top 10 Cheater Animals (10): Fox

posted by my-blogmedia | Friday, June 27, 2008 |

Reader, here are the top 10 cheater animals based on survey. My-blogmedia will present it one by one, starting from number 10. Here it is. Enjoy.

Cheater, cheater, belly eater! There have been plenty of people who’ve scammed their way to the top, and the same goes for the animal kingdom. Find out which creatures are bending the rules to stay ahead, or sometimes, just to survive.

Fox
Perhaps the phrase "sly as a fox" owes its origin to the ultra-sneaky foxes in the mountains of South America. Quite frankly, the foxes need to be as cunning as possible, as birds in this region -- such as the rhea -- tend to be quite large. And you know what they say about big birds ... big eggs. Foxes wait for the rheas to make a move so they can sneak in and snatch the eggs, but because the eggs are often too large to grab in their mouths, the foxes will roll the eggs with their snouts to knock them against something, like a rock or a tree, in the hopes of breaking them down. So, does that qualify as over easy or sunny-side up?
